Here are some of the things you might need to do - when approaching non-fictions texts:

work out what the text is saying

distinguish between fact and opinion

follow an argument

select material from the text to suit your task (to answer the question)

describe how the material is presented

explain the effects created by the ways in which language is used

When reading and responding to a non-fiction text approach it in a systematic manner by:

Read the question or task carefully
Underline any key words or important words
Read the text through to get a general idea of what it is about - do not worry if you do not understand everything on the first read
Read the text again - Now look for information you will need to answer the question or complete your task
