English - English Exam Skills - Commenting on Texts & Ideas

In your GCSE English exam 'writing to comment' can take two basic forms.

You may be asked to:

1. Comment on an idea.

2. Comment on how a writer uses language to create their effects of the methods they use to present their ideas or views.

To communicate effectively you need to:

Have ideas on the issue(s) that you have been asked to comment on.

Be aware of how ideas are communicated, or how language is used to create effects.
