English - Studying Poetry - 2

Structure

The poet makes conscious choices, to organise the poem as it appears on the page. Try to understand the poet's thinking behind:

The organisation of the lines

Any repetition of lines or varying lengths of lines

Whether lines are end-stopped or whether the sense carries over to the next line.

Rhyme

Consider the rhyming scheme and ask yourself these questions:

What, if any, is the rhyming scheme?

Are the rhymes exact or approximate and for what purpose?

Do some lines have rhyming words within them and why?

If there are no rhymes, why does the line end where it does?

Rhythm

Listen for:

Which words are stressed

Whether there is a pattern of sound which creates a mood

Whether this mood suits the subject matter.
