English - Writing to Argue, Persuade & Advise - Planning your Argument

Aim = to present and develop your point of view as clearly and effectively as possible.

Think about the topic you have been given

Work out what your ideas on the given topic are and consider your standpoint

Brainstorm your ideas, both for and against the view, you have taken

Decide which points you want to make and in what order you want to make them

Develop your ideas on each point

Decide on the evidence that you give to support your ideas

End your argument with an effective conclusion

 

Note: Careful Planning = Effective Argument.

When planning your argument, whilst reading the texts make a note of:

Key points in support of the arguments.

Facts.

Opinions.

You could put K (for Key points ), F (for Facts ) and O (for Opinions ), in the margin of the text(s), to help you in your exam.
