Modern Poetic Technique

Modern poetry can use the same techniques as pre-1914 poetry. In addition it may:

Deal with aspects of modern life and life experiences.

Make use of free verse, e.g. verse without a regular rhythm pattern and/or rhyme scheme.

Use less formal language, sometimes containing modern colloquialisms or vocabulary.

 

Planning a modern poetry assignment

Read the poem carefully several times.

Identify it's surface meaning.

Consider whether or not there is any underlying meaning.

 

Examine the poet's use of:

Vocabulary

Imagery

Structure

Rhyme & rhythm

Identify specific examples.

Comment on their effects.

Consider your own ideas and responses to the poem.
