Rhyme in poetry:

Makes the poem sound pleasing to the ear and adds a 'musical' quality to the poem.

Emphasises certain words. Very often the words that rhyme are given a certain prominence.

Unifies the poem, drawing lines and stanzas together, through the pattern it imposes on them.

Provides the poem with an incantatory or ritualistic feel.

Influences the rhythm of the verse.

Gives a sense of finality. A rhyming couplet is often used to provide a sense of 'ending'.

Exerts a subconscious effect on the reader, perhaps drawing together words or ideas.
