English - A Planned Approach to Studying Poetry - Checklist

1.Read the poem carefully several times - out loud.

2.Write down your initial responses, note any ideas that come into your head.

3.Write down your thoughts about the subject or theme of the poem.

4.Note ways in which the poet uses language:

rhyme

metaphors

similes

images

5. Describe: the tone or atmosphere the poem has and how this is created.

6. Note other effects created in the poem:

rhyme

rhythm

alliteration

onomatopoeia

7.Summarise: your ideas on the poem and how the poem 'works' as a whole.
