The outer most layer of the Earth is called the crust. Most of it is only made up of five elements:

Oxygen

Silicon

Aluminium

Iron

Calcium

It is rare for these elements to occur alone, they often occur as combined substances called compounds.

 

Common elements

Oxygen is the most abundant element in the Earth’s crust. It often occurs combined with silicon, the second most abundant element, and with aluminium and iron.
